15 minutes
6-10 hours in the slow cooker
Serves 8-10
~1.5kg ham hocks
500g green split peas (soaked overnight)
3 carrots, finely chopped
3 celery stalks, finely chopped (optional if you don't like celery!)
1 onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons fresh herbs (thyme, parsley) or 2 tsps dried mixed herbs
Generous pinch each of salt and pepper
1. Place the ham, drained and rinsed split peas, chopped veges, herbs and 2 litres of water into the slow cooker.
2. Cook on low for 8-10 hours or high for 6-7 hours.
3. Take out the ham hocks, pull the meat off the bones and chop into shred. Add back into the soup.
The soup will solidify when cool due to the gelatinous nature of the ham. This is a good thing and great for healing your gut.
